Ruvyironza Hydropower Project Now Operational in Burundi

21st August, 2025

August 2025 – Gridworks is pleased to share that the Ruvyironza Hydropower Project, a 1.65MW run-of-river plant in south-central Burundi, is now fully operational.

Developed by Songa Energy, a subsidiary of Anzana Electric Group (formerly Virunga Power), the project was officially commissioned in April 2025 with national partner REGIDESO, the state-owned electricity and water utility.

Construction began in May 2023 and was completed on schedule in just 23 months. The plant is already feeding clean, renewable energy into the national grid. In the months ahead, communities close to Ruvyironza will begin connecting to power from the project—an essential step in a country where only 2% of rural households currently have access to electricity.

Shaun Githuku, Director at Gridworks, commented:

“The Ruvyi hydropower project will make a significant contribution to energy access and economic development in Burundi. It’s a great example of the innovative ways Anzana works with partners to deliver impact for people and businesses in a country with one of Africa’s lowest electrification rates.”

By supporting projects like Ruvyironza, Gridworks and Anzana Electric Group, they are helping to expand energy access, strengthen the grid, and create opportunities for communities across rural Burundi.
