Established in 2010, the Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office was mandated by the South African government to procure electricity from the private sector in support of a diversified, secure, and sustainable energy mix.  Initially focused on renewables, the IPP Office now manages a diversified energy portfolio that includes renewable energy, hybrid systems, battery energy storage, and gas-to-power technologies.

During aef this year, the IPP Office proudly celebrates 15 years of enabling investment, innovation, and impact. Through transparent and competitive procurement processes, it has attracted over R292.2 billion in private sector investment and enabled the delivery of more than 7,615 MW to the national grid. The Office continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the country’s evolving energy mix while promoting long-term security of supply.

Beyond energy generation, the IPP Office drives inclusive growth and socio-economic transformation.  Approximately 38.1% of project ownership is held by Black South Africans, with local communities having an ownership stake in the projects.  The impact is far-reaching, stimulating local economies, creating jobs, and transferring skills.

The IPP Office is widely regarded as a model of successful public-private collaboration, transparent procurement, and impact-driven development, transforming South Africa’s energy future while improving lives.
