A $126m solar plant for the mines of Mozambique’s Gaza Province

26th October, 2026

The Mozambican government plans to invest about $126m in a solar plant to supply mining companies in Gaza Province, according to the state news agency AIM, reporting remarks by the governor, Alfeu Cuna, in Nacala. The province has heavy mineral sands at Chibuto and limestone at Mabalane, where processing is planned.

Southern Mozambique’s Gaza Province is to have a solar plant to supply electricity to its mining companies, with the Mozambican government planning to invest about $126m, according to AIM, which reported the plan from remarks by the provincial governor, Alfeu Cuna, at the Conference on Adding Value to Mineral Resources (CAVAME-d 2026) in Nacala.

Supply from the plant is meant to strengthen power for the mining companies and for the industries linked to mineral extraction, in a province where Cuna pointed to substations at Lionde and Xai-Xai and to transmission lines already in place.

Heavy mineral sands at Chibuto and limestone at Mabalane are among the resources the province has identified, alongside other minerals that could go into cement and other industries, and mineral processing facilities are planned in the districts of Mabalane and Mapai, where limestone deposits have been found.

To make investment and land allocation easier, the provincial government is demarcating areas with mining potential, and a special economic zone is under consideration near the international airport and the mining areas to draw in complementary activities and industrial value chains. Road and rail links already serve the province, which also counts a planned deep-water port among the logistics it offers investors.
