Lobito Corridor power study funded by USTDA with Anzana Electric Group
The US Trade and Development Agency signed an agreement with Anzana Electric Group in New York on Tuesday to fund a feasibility study for hydropower and distribution in Lualaba in the DRC and North-Western Zambia, covering the mines that feed the Lobito Corridor and more than three million residents.
The US Trade and Development Agency signed an agreement on Tuesday with Anzana Electric Group to fund a feasibility study into expanding hydropower generation and upgrading electricity distribution across Lualaba province in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia’s North-Western province.
The study covers rehabilitating existing hydropower assets, developing new generation and expanding the distribution networks that supply the copper and cobalt operations feeding the corridor, along with more than three million residents of the region.
USTDA puts the result at new connections for more than half a million homes and businesses, and frames the work as a route for mining companies along the corridor to cut their reliance on costly diesel generation, in a region where mining consumes most of the available power.
Thomas R. Hardy, the agency’s deputy director, said reliable power “allows mines to operate, businesses to profit, and families to thrive”.
Anzana’s chief executive Brian Kelly tied the corridor’s ambition to reliable electricity and described the partnership as designed to draw long-term private investment into the infrastructure behind it. The company develops and operates hydropower and distribution across East, Central and Southern Africa, backed by private American investors and by Gridworks, which is owned by British International Investment.
The agency will post a request for proposals for the study, which US companies will carry out, and says the work supports the Strategic Partnership Agreement signed by the US and DRC governments in December 2025.
