What Guinea’s €269.5m from EBID adds to a grid that already exports

1st October, 2026

Guinea signed three loan agreements worth €269.5 million with the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development in Conakry on 10 September, covering health, transport and energy. The country already sells 1,174GWh a year into Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau under bilateral contracts.

Guinea’s hydropower already leaves the country, with EDG contracted to deliver 1,174GWh a year to Senelec in Senegal, NAWEC in The Gambia and EAGB in Guinea-Bissau at around $0.11 per kilowatt-hour under three bilateral agreements.

Those exports run over the OMVG interconnection, which moved Guinea-Bissau off rental power entirely and cut The Gambia’s thermal consumption sharply.

Kaleta and Souapiti, alongside the Karpowership plant, now cover domestic demand well enough that an arrangement to import up to 120MW from Senegal at $0.20 per kilowatt-hour has ended.

Against that backdrop, the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development signed three loans with Guinea in Conakry on 10 September worth €269.5 million, for projects across health, transport and energy, signed by EBID’s president George Agyekum Donkor and Guinea’s Minister of Economy, Finance and Budget, Mariama Ciré Sylla.

The mining load is the next question, with a study under way, financed through the Guinea-Mali project, on the electricity demand of the mines and how to connect them to the grid.
