Menengai takes Kenya’s geothermal fleet past 1,000MW

17th October, 2026

Kenya’s geothermal plants produced 6,420.51GWh in the year to June 2026, 40.91% of all the electricity the country generated, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. New capacity of 70MW at Menengai, from Kaishan Renewable Energy and Globeleq, lifted the installed geothermal fleet to 1,013.7MW.

Kenya’s geothermal generation rose to 6,420.51GWh in the 2025/26 financial year from 5,718.16GWh the year before. That lifted its share of everything the country generated to 40.91% from 39.51%, according to figures the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) published on 30 September.

The year’s new geothermal capacity came from Menengai in Nakuru County, where Kaishan Renewable Energy and Globeleq each added 35MW. That took installed geothermal capacity from 943.7MW to 1,013.7MW.

Hydropower supplied 3,554.31GWh, or 22.65% of generation, and wind 1,931.72GWh, or 12.31%. Imports accounted for 12.19% of supply and interconnected thermal plants for 8.34%.

Total generation rose 8.44% to 15,692.81GWh, with renewable sources accounting for 81.13% of the energy generated and 81.16% of installed capacity. With imports included, clean sources made up 91.65% of the electricity supplied.

KenGen produced 57.52% of all generation over the year, and demand peaked at 2,514.28MW on 29 June 2026.
