Zambia thermal power adds 300MW under a ZESCO offtake with room to double

2nd August, 2026

Ever Great Energy is developing the plant with majority partner Wonderful Group Services, and the Singapore contractor Ziquan Group holds the turnkey construction scope. A second phase would take capacity to 600MW within five years of the first being completed. ZCCM-IH says it is engaging with the relevant authorities.

The first phase is two 150MW units using circulating fluidised bed combustion, supported by a water treatment facility and its own transmission infrastructure. Ever Great Energy is developing it alongside the majority partner Wonderful Group Services, with the Singapore-based contractor Ziquan Group holding the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction scope. Ziquan has delivered thermal plants in Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo and China.

The plant is grid-connected under a power purchase agreement with ZESCO. A second phase would expand capacity to 600MW within five years of the first being completed, subject to conditions precedent being finalised.

ZCCM-IH, the state investment holding company with stakes across Zambian mining and energy, said it is engaging constructively with the relevant authorities and is confident in the merits of the transaction.

The capacity is being added into a system where copper mining takes roughly a third of national electricity and hydropower supplies more than 80 per cent of installed generation, a mix that left industrial users exposed during the 2024 drought.
