Azura Power buys into Enpower with ‘significant long-term ambitions for South Africa’
Azura Power, which runs 752MW of generation across three African markets, has taken a majority stake in Enpower Trading, its first investment in South Africa. Enpower holds a NERSA trading licence and has provided wheeling services in George since 2022 and in Cape Town since 2024.
Azura Power has made its first investment in South Africa, taking a majority stake in Enpower Trading. In February 2022, Enpower became only the second private company to hold a NERSA electricity trading licence, and the first to be granted one in more than 12 years.
Its generation business runs to 752MW, the largest share at the 461MW Azura-Edo plant in Nigeria. The 175MW CTRG plant in Mozambique and the 116MW Tobene plant in Senegal make up the rest, and Azura says the three supply around 10% of grid baseload in their markets.
Enpower’s licences now reach beyond its domestic trading permit, with an import and export trading licence granted in July 2025 for cross-border transactions within SADC and conditional market participant status in the Southern African Power Pool.
Under its NERSA licence, Enpower buys power from independent producers and wheels it across Eskom and municipal networks to commercial and industrial customers, with wheeling services running in George since 2022 and in Cape Town since 2024.
Azura has not disclosed the size of its stake or what it paid, and Enpower’s founders and management team remain shareholders. “We have significant long-term ambitions for South Africa,” said Dave Peacock, Azura’s chief executive. “We see tremendous opportunity in the country’s evolving power sector.”
ePointZero, the wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s 2PointZero Group, agreed in August to acquire 90% of Azura itself, in a deal announced as subject to regulatory approvals and closing conditions, and Azura reports a development pipeline of more than 1.5GW.
Enpower will serve as Azura’s electricity trading platform in South Africa, and Azura says it will keep exploring further investment across the country’s power sector.
