Africa’s solar imports soar in clean energy push

8th October, 2025

LONDON, Oct. 8, 2025, ENN: Renewable energy became the world’s largest source of electricity in the first half of this year, surpassing coal for the first time, according to new data from London-based energy think tank, Ember. The report highlighted how African countries are rapidly increasing solar panel imports as part of efforts to expand clean energy and cut dependence on fossil fuels. It found that imports across the continent rose by 60 per cent in the 12 months to June 2025, reaching a record 15 gigawatts of capacity.

The growth was most pronounced in Algeria, where imports increased 33-fold, followed by Zambia, which recorded an eightfold rise, and Botswana, where imports were up sevenfold. Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt also saw major increases, reflecting growing investment in renewable energy infrastructure and rising demand for reliable electricity.

Ember also highlights the affordability of solar in Africa. In Nigeria, a 420-watt panel costing about $60 can generate around 550 kilowatt-hours of power each year, roughly twice the energy value of $60 worth of diesel.

In Zambia, the surge in imports aligns with efforts to reduce dependence on hydropower, which can be affected by drought. Recent projects include the 100-megawatt Chisamba Solar Plant and the 60-megawatt Itimpi Solar Power Station, both designed to strengthen grid stability and cut outages.

Across the continent, policymakers view solar as essential for energy security and climate resilience. Ember said Western nations such as the United States and members of the European Union should support Africa’s renewable expansion through investment, fair trade and technology partnerships to help sustain the continent’s rapid progress.

Ember’s chief analyst Dave Jones said the findings show that solar power is becoming a key driver of Africa’s energy transition. ‘This report is a call to action to ensure the world’s cheapest electricity source fulfils its vast potential. Governments now need to make sure that the panels being imported are rapidly installed and benefit local communities.

The next steps in Africa’s energy transition will take centre stage at the Zimbabwe Zambia Energy Projects Summit on 28 November 2025 in Livingstone, Zambia. More information is available here.
