Nigerian Indigenous Women in Mining and Natural Resources Organisation
The mining sector globally, including Nigeria, faces gender diversity challenges. Despite efforts to promote inclusion, women represent only 6.8% of Nigeria’s extractive workforce, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining, where they are more involved in labor-intensive and high-risk lower-value mineral extraction.
Women in Nigeria’s mining sector are overcoming challenges and making significant impacts. A 2020 monograph by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development highlighted their contributions, showcasing the resilience and vital roles of women in the male-dominated industry.
The Nigerian Indigenous Women in Mining and Natural Resources Organisation (NIWIMNRO) was established to support these women. It documents the struggles and achievements of artisanal women miners, recognising them as unsung heroes who strive for excellence in a challenging sector.
