South Africa dispatchable solar starts flowing as Hydra pairs 216MW with a 500MWh battery
The Northen Cape facility near De Ar entered operation this month under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, contracted to deliver 75MW between 5am and 9.30pm daily. TotalEnergies and Reatile Renewables hold the equity, with more than 400GWh a year committed to Eskom over 20 years.
Outside De Ar in the Northern Cape 216MW of solar generation now runs alongside 500MWh of battery storage. The Hydra project entered operation in July, contracted to supply 75MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to the national grid every day between 5am and 9.30pm.
The contract comes from the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, designed to procure 2,000MW of dispatchable generation from any technology able to supply capacity and ancillary services inside that window. Bidders were permitted to submit portfolios combining different technologies, which is what Hydra is. The equity is held by TotalEnergies at 35 per cent, Hydra Storage Holding at 35 per cent and Reatile Renewables at 30 per cent.

The proportions are the point. A solar plant close to three times the contracted capacity, sized against a battery large enough to carry the evening, produces a firm number for 16 and a half hours rather than a curve that follows the sun. The facility is expected to supply more than 400GWh a year under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom.
Hydra is one of several projects reaching operation under the same programme. Mulilo Total Coega in the Eastern Cape carries a contracted capacity of 197.76MW, combining solar generation with gas engines to achieve the same dispatchability by a different route.
Public procurement continues to set the reference price. Analysis published this year found that Mulilo’s 337MW Middlepunt project, selected under Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, achieved the lowest tariff awarded under that programme to date, and that the public channel remains both the volume driver and the benchmark against which private market tariffs are set.
Battery procurement is running in parallel. The Battery Energy Storage IPP Procurement Programme has continued to award capacity, while Eskom’s own storage rollout is positioned as a grid-strengthening measure to carry more renewable generation. Hydra is what that looks like when the two arrive together on one site.
