A 3MW solar hybrid powers the University of Abuja from tomorrow

16th September, 2026

The Rural Electrification Agency commissions a 3MW solar hybrid plant at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja on Wednesday 16 September, under Phase II of the Energizing Education Programme and with support from the World Bank Group. Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power, performs the commissioning.

Three megawatts of solar hybrid generation comes online at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja on Wednesday, commissioned by Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power, under Phase II of the Federal Government’s Energizing Education Programme and with support from the World Bank Group.

Federal universities and university teaching hospitals are what the programme has been built around, and the Rural Electrification Agency has run it across successive phases with the stated aim of strengthening clean, sustainable and reliable energy infrastructure for teaching, learning and innovation.

Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, draws its intake from every state in the federation rather than from a single region, which gives a campus generation project a national footprint that most industrial installations of the same size do not have.

What the Agency describes as the wider purpose is demonstrating how targeted renewable investment can transform critical public institutions while advancing Nigeria’s energy access and sustainability objectives.

Campus generation has been a recurring proposition across African markets, with universities offering the land, the concentrated daytime demand and the creditworthiness that independent power projects look for, and Nigeria holds a large number of federal institutions with broadly similar characteristics.

The commissioning takes place on Wednesday 16 September.

Nigeria NOW! and YES! Nigeria take place on 19 and 20 November 2026 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, under the patronage of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. YES! Nigeria on 20 November brings together students from the University of Abuja and Philomath University.
