Guinea builds alumina refineries on a grid of about 1,000MW

Three alumina refineries are under construction in Guinea and the government wants five by 2030, Daouda Diakite told African Mining Week in Cape Town. The country generates about 1,000MW, mostly from hydro, and says industrialisation will need 5,000MW to 10,000MW. Investors and governments across the continent are now weighing that gap.

A third plant for Lomé’s port as Togo plans 120MW of gas power

Togo is preparing to procure a 120MW dual-fuel plant at the Lomé Thermal Power Plant site, running mainly on natural gas, with World Bank support under its Mission 300 energy compact. The selection process is expected to launch in the fourth quarter, with peak demand growing about 10% a year.

Ghana power sector puts 35 mini-grids and nuclear on its 2027 list

Ghana’s Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has put 35 mini-grids and the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme among the priorities for 2027, after a year in which a fire at the Akosombo switchyard took more than 1,000MW off the system and more than 2,000 new transformers were procured.

Solarcentury Africa has started full commercial operation of the second phase of its Mailo solar plant in Zambia’s Chitambo district, adding 34.5MWp to take the site to 59.5MWp. The first phase has sold its power on a fully merchant basis through the Southern African Power Pool since July 2025.

Three Zambia solar plants totalling 320MW are due before the year ends

Zambia’s Ministry of Energy expects to commission 320MW of solar before the end of 2026, the largest share from a 120MW plant in Mumbwa. Bob Sianjalika, its Principal Public Relations Officer, told ZANIS that applications from independent power producers are still arriving, some with ZESCO power purchase agreements signed.
